Description of the family

Trees, shrubs or climbers. Stipules 0 (in ours). Leaves simple, opposite (Cassinopsis) or alternate. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, (4-)5-merous, actinomorphic. Calyx 0 or small. Stamens as many as the petals, free, alternating with the petals. Ovary superior, 1-locular; ovules 2. Fruit a 1-seeded drupe.

Worldwide: 24 genera, mainly tropical.
